In a recent survey done by the Pew Research Center found that 65% of ALL U.S. adults now use social networking sites. It is a surge of 61% from the previous year.

Why is your organization still on the fence about using social media marketing?

That was the question that I asked myself because those folks coming online hit the sweet spot of what an ideal customer looks like in your niche or business. The majority of the growth came from those over 30 years old. Even folks who have already been indifferent to the internet generally are coming on board as 33% of these over 65 use and take part in social networking. (That’s a 20 percent increase from the entire year before!)

In internet marketing, you go where your traffic is!

If you are a marketer, whether it’s bricks and mortar or the web, you always wanted to go where the masses were huddled. Not long ago, that meant you’ll head to radio, TV or newspapers. The approach there is that you shot your message out in shotgun fashion and hope it hit enough interested parties that could like your product or service.

Now with the web (and especially Facebook) it is possible to really hone in on your own likely customer. Adult social media If one of your customer personas is women who live within 25 miles of Orlando, are married and family members income is $50,000 or more, that is all of your message will hit.

Define your ideal customer and go after it!

So, the idea here’s to learn your customer persona or personas. Exactly what is a persona? Take a moment and define what/who make up your ideal customer for your product or service. This is enlightening because if you take time to do this, you are likely to be so much farther before your competition!

Give that persona a name and begin selling to it!

You have heard the word “soccer moms” right? Well, car manufacturers understood who their ideal customer was because of their mini-vans. They then tried to market into that market, paid attention to their feedback and honed their message until it resonated perfectly with that persona.

So, whether you select a generic term or use a name like I really do with a product that I sell on another site “Nate Newbie”, I refer to them and market to that persona.

Your takeaway out of this article…

Upfront, in the event that you aren’t using social media for your business, you are only hurting yourself, because your customers AND your competition is doing so!
